UPDATE – I bought a 15-pack of Yards Brewing Co. newest beer, Philly Standard, over Labor Day Weekend. It tastes like a fancier version of Miller Lite. It has more flavor than a can of Miller Lite and a bit more alcohol by volume, but at the end of the day it’s just another light beer that Yards does an exceedingly well job at marketing. It’s refreshing and perfect for tailgating, but if you’re a beer snob like me, you may feel a bit underwhelmed. Yards is still one of my favorite local breweries with a diverse lineup catering to all beer connoisseurs, but this connoisseur prefers their Philthy Hazy IPA. Drinkers choice.
I like a nice strong Indian Pale Ale as much as the next guy, but sometimes you need to opt for a lighter, yet refreshing, alternative. I’m not going to go to a family gathering or an Eagles game and slam back IPAs all day. Nor am I going to settle for a can of Busch or Bud Light. I have more class than that. So, there’s an obvious gap in my drinking portfolio that needs to be filled. Once again, here comes Yards Brewing Co. to the rescue, this time with a new beer called Philly Standard.
“Works just as hard as you do.” If that doesn’t just scream Philly to you, then maybe you’re in the wrong city. Let’s take a closer look at this beauty.
Sleek design with a classy name
Yards Brewing Co.’s new beer is wrapped in a sleek black label. The words Philly Standard are emphasized in bold white letters and wrapped in a vibrant red outline. Seen below that is a catchy, yet simple, tagline Work Hard Drink Easy. However, probably the best part of the design is the pigeon seen on the bottle neck holding a 215 sign. I love that!
What’s in the bottle?
The beer looks good. The branding is spot on and makes me want to try it, but what’s in the bottle? What are the stats?
Alcohol by Volume (ABV)
Most of us look for the ABV when buying beer. Philly Standard has an ABV of 4.5% compared to Busch’s 4.3% and Bud Light’s 4.2%. So, while it’s certainly a light beer, it’s not that light.
International Bitterness Units (IBU)
IBU is the measure of a beer’s bitterness. The IBU scale typically goes from 5 (not very bitter) all the way up to 120 (extremely bitter). Philly Standard has an IBU of 10 compared to Busch which doesn’t report an IBU (because water isn’t bitter) and Bud Light which has an IBU of 6. Philly Standard isn’t considered a bitter or sour beer by any means.
Other noteworthy stats
Does it taste good?
Philly Standard is a simple beer. It’s comprised of 4 ingredients: malt, hops, yeast, and water. I consider it a volume beer. A beer that a bunch of rowdy Eagles fans can drink while tailgating without getting into a fight (hopefully); and while it may look like a Yuengling, it’s cool and refreshing (some might even say co-freshin’) in it’s own regard. Does it taste good? Well, it doesn’t taste bad… that’s for sure.
How much does it cost?
Philly Standard comes in three varieties:
- 6 pack (12oz bottles) – $10.99
- 15 pack (12oz cans) – $18.99
- 24 pack (12oz bottles) – $34.99
You can pick up Philly Standard, the all new beer from Yards Brewing Co., from your local beer distributor beginning on August 15.
